Unreal Tournament Custom Level

I was tasked with building a white-box level for the online multiplayer shooter game Unreal Tournament (2017) using the UT Editor software which is a version of Unreal Engine 4 specialised for build maps for the game. I had to give the level a specific theme and develop it throughout the map.

As stated, for this project, I used the UT Editor software to white-box this level.

Unreal Tournament Custom Level Whitebox: CTF-Subway Shenanigans

I based the map around the theme of abandoned subway tunnels. This informed the design of map with how I used long underground tunnels with abandoned train cars strewn about which can be for traversal or cover by players. I also represented the theme in the lighting, where I used dim, yellowish lights coming from industrial and sometimes broken fluorescent lights.

Visual storytelling was used in the design of the map with a dig site being fenced off but accessible to players where they can find a WW2 era bomb at the bottom of, hinting as to why the tunnels may have been abandoned.

Within the brief, I had to make 2 iterations upon the original version, with the second iteration being the final version. I used Google Forms to acquire feedback from playtesting and used that to improve upon the initial version.

For more insight into the development of this project, the full design document I produced alongside the level can be viewed here. Additionally, if you wish to play the level yourself, the download link for the .pak files for each iteration (1st, 2nd and final) can be found through the download button above.
